My Mother's Keeper

  • A British Caribbean colonial style cabinet contains the essence of my mother's spirit and her life. Memories are made visible through cast objects: objects of her affection and objects that represent her daily routine as a housewife and mother. My mother often collected items that were functional but never used, they were only to be looked at. The cast objects (curiosities) are rendered useless (via methods of distortion). These objects speak of her personality, life, family, and origins. The installation questions the notions of value; objects of importance are now rendered useless but still exude a beauty in their obsolescence. Cabinets of curiosity once housed important objects that were signifiers of class and status. This installation subtly alludes to the class structure and discrimination that exists in the Caribbean.
